Caring for your Vancouver Island Real Estate deck
Caring for your Vancouver Island real estate deck is not difficult once you realize what needs to be done and how often. If you have a wooden cedar deck, like I do, you need to stain and seal it once in a while so that it stays in good condition. The stain has a habit of wearing off after a few years so this may have to be done every five years or so. You simply strip the stain that is currently on the deck, use a power sander to get rid the excess stain and seal coat, wash it down and remove all dust and then stain it any color you want. Staining wood is easy - you simply have to paint it on and then remove it with a cloth.
After the wood is stained, you then should seal it with a waterproof coating. This will enable the stain to last longer. You can apply this with a roller on a long pole so it is easy to do. This type of job can be done in one day. But I got mine done in one hour because I made a party out of the whole deal.
I made some sausage and peppers as well as a lasagna and some side dishes and had an impromptu party to stain and seal my deck. It was so much fun for everyone.
Of all of the neighbors who worked the hardest, I would have to say John was at the top. A former member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, John is retired but in tip top shape. He is the most respected resident on the block and is always there to help everyone. His wife passed away a few years ago so he and Bob often talk about yard work and sports as they are both widowers with grandchildren.
The only glitch was when Ron and Sheila went out to get more ice for the iced tea and drinks and ended up getting a flat tire on the car. This caused them to be gone over three hours which had their spouses concerned, especially since they were not picking up their mobile phones. But all was well and the phones were errantly turned off accidentally.
All in all, it was very productive and fun for everyone. And I got my deck stained and sealed quickly with the help of my wonderful neighbors.
