Vancouver Island real estate and pave drives
To really add to the value of your Vancouver Island real estate, consider a pave driveway. Pave drives are all the rage right now and they are easy enough to do it yourself. You can actually put in your own pave drive using a number of different materials, as long as you get rid of the current driveway.
My neighbour and I worked on his pave driveway last weekend. We managed to get rid of all of the concrete that was in the driveway that was pretty much cracked and ruined. We used a jackhammer, which we rented from a rental store, to get the remaining concrete up. This made quite a racket, as you can imagine, so we waited until it was a decent hour before we began work on Saturday morning. We soon had the concrete broken up into sufficiently small pieces that we could toss into the dumpster.
Once the concrete was broken up and out of the driveway, we had to contend with the stones and dirt. We raked up all of the excessive stones and smoothed out the surface. This job took us all day. Finally, the driveway was clear of debris and had just a thick layer of dirt on the bottom. The next day, we were able to start with the pave bricks.
Laying a brick driveway is like laying other bricks. This involves putting the brick down on the driveway and putting mortar between the bricks. The bricks that you use for a driveway are flatter than those for a house, but the concept is the same
In addition to brick pavers, you can also get other stone pavers for your drive. My neighbour picked out bricks because he wanted the cobblestone look. We got halfway up the driveway before it grew dark. It was a time consuming job but looks great. The next day, he took the day off of work and then finished up the job. It took a while for it to set but this weekend; he finally put his car on the driveway.
We did have to outline the driveway with wood so that we knew how far we could extend the bricks. Some people do this with string but we did it with wood. It was very easy to do, for the most part, but just time consuming.
