Vancouver Island Real Estate Sod Installation

If your Vancouver Island real estate is new and has no grass, or if the grass is in such bad shape that it needs to be replaced, you may do better with laying sod instead of seeding the lawn for grass. Sod is instant and does not take years to grow. In addition to that, you will have better quality of grass. Sod is high quality grass that is grown at sod farms. It is generally delivered to you on a truck and comes in rolled up pieces. It can seem like a daunting task to lay your own sod, but it is not difficult. You do need a weighted roller in order to lay sod. This can be rented at a rental store that deals in home gardening equipment.

The first step that you need to take when laying your own sod is to make sure that the ground is level. You will most likely have to use a roto tiller to turn over all of the existing grass and then level it off with top soil. Top soil is also usually delivered by a truck. You can use a wheel barrow to put the top soil down on the ground and then go over it with a rake, making sure that the entire area consists of smooth and even rich dirt before laying the sod.

You need to fill the sod roller up with water. Water is what you will use to weigh down the roller so that it packs the sod into the ground. It can then be drained when you are finished and the device returned to the rental agency. You can start by laying the sod down in pieces, right next to each other so that there are no gaps. Do not worry about the obvious signs of where the sod has been laid as it will soon be covered up as the grass takes root and fills in. You should go over the sod as it is installed several times with the roller to make sure it is packed into the ground as firmly as possible. This is a job that is perfect for two people to do and can easily be accomplished in a day.

Continue laying the sod and rolling it out until you are finished with the entire lawn. Then roll the sod the opposite direction, going both vertically and horizontally on the lawn. After you have finished rolling the sod with the weighted roller, you can drain the water from the roller and return it to the rental agency. You should then commence to watering the sod. The sod should not be over watered. You should water it when you first put it in for 24 hours. Then every other day as needed, the best time to lay sod is in the early fall. It will have plenty of time to settle into the ground before the frost and take root. In the spring, the sod will again turn green. You can then water it as needed.

Avoid laying sod in the summer months as you may be tempted to over water it. Many people lay sod in the late spring, although it is best in the early fall, after the heat and before the cold sets in. It is not a difficult job to accomplish and you will find that in one day, you will have a lawn.
